Nick Mullens expected to start vs. Lions on Christmas Eve

After an up-and-down performance against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is reporting that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens is expected to start on Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Lions.

The game on Christmas Eve will be the Vikings’ second consecutive winter whiteout at U.S. Bank Stadium. They beat the New York Giants by a score of 27-24 last season.

Mullens started over Josh Dobbs and Jaren Hall against the Bengals and had some good moments. He completed 26-of-33 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Jordan Addison. Unfortunately, there were two bad interceptions and a pick-six that was called back due to an offsides call on Trey Hendrickson that had nothing to do with the play.

Is it the right call to start Mullens? That is up to the coaching staff to decide. When you look at everything all-encompassing, he is the best option in trying to win games now. If and when the Vikings have a playoff spot clinched or are eliminated, then the conversation begins about playing Hall to get him some experience.
