Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been summonsed to face a court accused of assaulting a former girlfriend.

The world No 40 is due to appear in a magistrates court in the Australian Capital Territory next month, according to The Canberra Times.

“ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,” police said on Tuesday.

The newspaper said it understood the charge, which carries a maximum jail sentence of two years, relates to an allegation Kyrgios grabbed former partner Chiara Passari.

It said barrister Jason Moffett had confirmed he had been briefed in the matter and his client was aware of the charge.

“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” Mr Moffett told The Canberra Times.

“The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously”.

Australian Kyrgios is preparing to face Cristian Garín in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

He has played some of the best tennis of his career to reach the last eight for the first time since 2014.

But Kyrgios’s run has also been marked by controversy, having been fined $10,000 for spitting at a fan during his first round tie against Paul Jubb, and then $4,000 for swearing during Saturday’s fiery clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

And there could be more fines on the way as Kyrgios broke Wimbledon’s strict white dress code, wearing red Air Jordan trainers and a red cap for an on-court interview following his most recent victory.
