Nick Kyrgios has spoken about the transformation he has gone through to win his first ATP Tour event for three years at the Citi Open.
The 27-year-old returned from his Wimbledon final defeat to Novak Djokovic last month in style taking just 81 minutes to defeat Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4 6-3 to win the Washington event. It was his first ATP Tour win since winning the same tournament in 2019.
An emotional Kyrgios fell flat on his back after the victory and spoke about the transformation which has seen him rise to 37th in the ATP rankings, meaning he is seeded for the US Open starting later this month.
"It's very emotional for me," said Kyrgios. "To see where I was last year to now is just an incredible transformation.
"I just came with great energy today. I knew that I had experience on my side today. I love this court and I've played so many good matches here, I'm really happy with myself.
"I've been in some really dark places, to just be able to turn it around.
"There are so many people who have helped me get there, myself I have shown some serious strength to just continue and persevere through all those times and to still perform and win tournaments like this."
The Australian completed a rare accomplishment at the Washington event winning the men's singles and doubles titles at the same event. Kyrgios alongside doubles specialist Jack Sock cruised past Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek in the final after being given a semi-final a walkover against Tiafoe and Alex de Minaur.
