NI weather latest as Met Office warn of heavy downpours and thunder

The Met Office has warned of a possible thunderstorm as a showery band of rain moves across Northern Ireland.

Heavy downpours have begun across the majority of the NI as rain sweeps across the south and east which could create unpleasant travel conditions in Co Armagh and Co Down.

The heavy rain is expected to last until at least 6pm tonight when the weather should dry, which will continue overnight with forecast predicting dry and sunny weather in the morning.

Although there could be some isolated showers, particularly in the North Coast region through the night.

The temperatures will remain warm at around 18 degrees, although these could drop significantly through the night with minimum temmperatures of seven degrees likely in places.

The Met Office said: "A showery band of rain is moving south-east across NI. Some of this locally heavy with an isolated thunderstorm possible here and there. Some unpleasant travel conditions possible from surface water and spray in the next few hours especially Armagh and Down."
