NI show Mountain Vets returns to BBC for third series

Mountain Vets made a return to the spectacular Glens of Antrim and Mourne Mountains this week. The show follows dedicated vets who offer vital emergency services and help bring the community together.

Produced by Rare Television with funding from Northern Ireland Screen, the show shares an insight into a world where animals outnumber people. The six-part series kicked off on Tuesday where we saw Rosalind must give champion Rhodesian Ridgeback Luna an emergency caesarean to save her puppies.

USPCA head vet Gillian also performed a complicated amputation on a bearded dragon’s tail.

Northern Ireland is home to an ancient mountain landscape, stretching from the majestic peaks of the Mournes in Co Down, northwards to the nine glens of Antrim and the coast. People here rely on their animals both large and small, livestock and pets, and pass down their love of animals from generation to generation so the vets act as a vital emergency service.

Across the series, we meet a couple of sick swans who need to be rescued, a three-legged Lurcher needing surgery, a goldfish, baby hedgehogs and a rescue dog looking for a second chance. All of this combined with the usual struggles of calving season, there is never a dull moment for the Mountain Vets.

Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to support the production of the latest series of ‘Mountain Vets’. With a large audience right across Britain set to watch the series on BBC Two, it’s a great way to shine a spotlight on Northern Ireland – highlighting our spectacular countryside, as well as our friendly and welcoming people. It will remind viewers across Great Britain why Northern Ireland is a great choice for a holiday.

“Publicity and broadcasts like this are a key element of Tourism Ireland’s programme of activity, to encourage travellers in Great Britain to put Northern Ireland on their holiday wish-list.”
