NI dog charities sign up to home heating price comparison website to boost flagging funds

A new company is helping Northern Ireland animal charities raise funds while helping the public find cheaper home energy provider.

Sophie's Dog Rescue and Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary have signed up to newly developed Switch for Charity, who describe themselves as Ireland’s first charity focused price a comparison website.

They say their mission if to make a difference and every time someone switches to a better home-energy deal using their website, they donate to the charity of their customer's choice.

Switch for Charity makes a £5 donation for every completed switch, using a portion of the commission they receive from the energy provider helping the charities which are facing a slump in donations as the cost of living continues to rise.

And they are running three competitions including two months' free electricity to the value of £100 in a prize draw on September 22 and two chances to win one year's free electricity to the value of £600 in a prize draw on December 16.

A spokesperson for the company, said: "Every time someone finds a better energy deal, we will donate £5 to charity and the best part is that you get to choose the charity we donate to.

"Upon receiving the [commission] payment from our energy partners, all donation requests associated with those completed switches are processed for payment.

"To choose a charity, you can browse our charity listings page or check out some of our awesome charity partners on social media and if you can’t find your favourite charity, you can nominate your own choice.. This way, you can make sure your favourite charity receives our donation.

"If you find a better home energy deal on Switch For Charity, we will ask you to select a charity from our list or nominate your own favourite charity. Once you’ve completed a successful switch to the new energy tariff, your donation request for that charity will be approved. Switch For Charity will donate £5 to each selected or nominated charity and all c harities nominated must be registered with the Charity Commission NI."

Last month Crosskennan signed up to the scheme alongside Sopie's Dog Rescue and Foyle Search and Rescue.

A spokesperson for Switch for Charity said: " It was a pleasure to get to hang out at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary this week. This facility is run with love and animal welfare at the very forefront of everything they do. The animals they rehabilitate and care for range from dogs with behavourial issues, horses that outgrew their 'pet status', energetic cats and very boisterous chickens.

"What really struck us while being shown around was the genuine passion this team has for what they do. Set up in 1996 by Lynne, they have strived for improved legislation for animal welfare and while they have had some success in this area, they recognise there is still a long way to go. We wish her and team the very best of luck with this challenge.

"Listening to Lynne we immediately could tell her heart is huge, her insight into human interactions with animals led to her having several groups of people call over to avail of the mental benefits you can find from caring for an animal. We also met a lovely young lady overcoming her fear of dogs at Crosskennan Lane Animal Sanctuary. This place is truly a special charity to visit."
