NI couples share their romantic tales and relationship secrets ahead of Valentine's Day

Love is in the air as Valentine's Day approaches and it has prompted several Northern Ireland couples to share their romantic tales and secrets to long lasting relationships.

Northern Irish Love Stories, a new film for BBC Northern Ireland, airs this Sunday night, 13 February, just in time for the most romantic day of the year.

Packed with nostalgia, the programme delves into the archives to relive some of the most memorable romantic moments from TV and film that have captured our hearts.

Among the couples featured are Trevor and Margo Burns, both aged 79 and from Donaghadee, Co Down.

The pair first met as teenagers in 1958 and their love blossomed over a shared passion for music, leading to their eventual marriage in September 1965.

"I had a guitar that my uncle gave me and one day I brought it down to the shop where Trevor was working," Margo told Belfast Live.

"I asked him to tune it up because he was in a music group at the time so it all started from there. He showed me a few guitar chords and told me I should take up, which I did for a few years but I wasn't that good!"

As well as working together at Cyril Lord Carpet Factory in Donaghadee, Margo joined the band and Trevor soon noticed her stunning singing voice.

"I took the guitar off her and that led to a row!" Trevor recalled. "I told her we were going to rename the band Margo & the Marvettes and put her up front.

"My mother had already told me 'if you put that wee girl in the band it'll be the best thing you ever do' so the romance grew from there."

The five-piece band later moved its home base to London and went all out trying to make a mark in music, leading to a life on the road and travelling to gigs across Europe, America and Australia.

Margo added: "The music took us all over the world to places we never thought we'd get to in a million years. We have had a great life because of it really and it was just the luck of the draw."

While Margo & the Marvettes disbanded in 1972, the couple continued performing as a duo called Take Two, which took them around the world entertaining all over for six years.

The pair formed with some old buds and gigged for a couple years as Margo & Trevor with the Rock & Roll Circus.

The couple came full circle and moved back to Northern Ireland to settle in 1980 after burning rubber on the road for 17 years but they still took every opportunity to gig globally whenever they could.

"We were been together 24/7 all those years constantly travelling so it was non-stop. Of course we did have our moments and plenty of rows but that was mostly to do with our work," Margo said.

"We have made some great memories but with getting older now, we're just out to enjoy life!"

Elsewhere in a tale of modern romance, the love story between Craig McCullough, 31, from Ballymena and Alice Lougheed, 28, started online and led to their first meeting in January 2013.

"Back then there were no dating apps like Tinder and online dating wasn't that big of a thing so I think there was still a bit of a question mark around it all," Craig explained.

"At the start we were a bit reluctant to tell people that's how we met and instead we said it was through mutual friends because we did have a few in common."

While Craig admitted he knew pretty quickly he had met the girl of his dreams, Alice wasn't quite so keen initially.

"We had been chatting for a couple of weeks but the first time we met up, I felt Craig was quite awkward and it just didn't feel right," she recalled.

After a few months of no contact, Alice read a book that Craig had recommended and she soon began to reconsider. The couple met up for what they call their 'second first date' and the rest is history.

The couple got engaged in May 2015, days after Alice's 22nd birthday and Craig was determined to keep the proposal a surprise and arranged a treasure hunt.

Kicking off in a coffee shop in her hometown of Bangor, Alice followed all the clues, ultimately ending up at Ballyholme beach where Craig was waiting.

The spot was chosen as that was where the couple enjoyed their first walk together - and Craig first fell, literally, for Alice.

Fairy lights and pictures of the happy pair were hanging from trees, with fresh flowers and a camera set up to capture the adorable moment.

The couple wed six months later on Friday, 13th November and are now parents to Micah, 2, and one-year-old Maggie.

Craig said: "On our wedding day, we went from the church to the reception via a tattoo parlour to have the number 13 put on both us.

"That certainly proved to be a big talking point later that evening. So if we ever forgot the date, we can just look at our legs!"

So what's the secret to their success?

"Listen to your wife," Craig joked, adding: "We've always been very open and honest with no big secrets between us. If we're annoyed about something, we make a point of talking it through."

"You're both equal in the marriage so one person shouldn't be doing more than the other," Alice added.

From love letters to dating apps, the way we find that special someone may have changed down the years, but the couples both agree on one thing - holding out for long lasting love is a worthwhile wait.

Northern Irish Love Stories airs on Sunday 13 February at 7pm on BBC One NI and also on BBC iPlayer.
