NI Council announces series of outdoor theatre shows amid pricing concerns

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have announced a series of outdoor theatre shows coming to the district this summer - but some have complained they are too expensive.

The Outdoor Theatre programme sees a series of performances in open air venues across the district in June and July.

According to the council, it is the first time such a large scale outdoor programme of theatre has come to the area, however some have asked whether the prices of the events are prohibitive to families in the midst of the cost of living crisis.

“An exciting new outdoor theatre programme supported by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will take place in June and July at a range of new and unusual settings in towns and villages across the district,” a council spokesperson said

“This is the first time such a large scale programme of outdoor theatre has been planned for the district and it means that the whole family can pack up a picnic, go to an outdoor venue near them and enjoy a fun open air show.

“The productions which will be undertaken by Heartbreak Theatre Company and Chapterhouse Theatre Company feature a mix of classic and modern authors featuring works by Jane Austen, William Shakespeare and David Walliams, an eclectic mix which have a broad appeal for a range of ages.

“From literary masterpieces such as Pride and Prejudice to the Shakespearean classic, Twelfth Night with a bit of a modern day twist, what’s not to enjoy.”

However, a post in a local Facebook group for Enniskillen residents sparked debate about the pricing if some of the performances.

For the events taking place at Enniskillen Castle, adult tickets are £18, while children’s tickets are £11.

A family of two adults and one child is priced at £45, and a picnic table can be rented at the venue for £90.

Other venues listed in the events programme are cheaper than Enniskillen Castle with a family ticket costing £38 at all other venues.

One person replying to the post said the prices were ‘ridiculous’, while another said it was a ‘rip off’.

“Why are the prices for Enniskillen Castle more expensive than other venues?,” one person asked.

“£90 for a picnic table-can we can take it home with us afterwards?”

“Times are tough enough never mind these ridiculous prices,” another person said.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council did not respond to request for comment on the issue of the pricing for the Outdoor Theatre programme.
