A recently retired nurse from the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen has said there was ‘nothing she enjoyed more’ than caring for patients over the last 40 years.
Irene Kettyle spent four decades working as a nurse in Co Fermanagh , 33 of those years working in the Children’s Ward.
Irene says she took great pride in her work over the years, and while she will continue to help out from time to time with shifts here and there, she is very much enjoying her retirement.

“I have spent 33 years nursing children and in the main I found the job rewarding,” Irene told MyFermanagh.
“I became a Deputy Ward Sister in 2008 which saw my leadership role evolve .
“That said it doesn't go without its challenges, the past two years have seen many changes with the challenges of Covid and managing staff sickness, keeping abreast of the ever changing Covid guidelines and infection control measures.
“I am a passionate and professionally dedicated individual who strives to advocate for my patients and deliver a good standard of care.
“There is nothing I enjoy more than being at the patient's bedside nursing them back to health in partnership with their parents.”
Irene added one of the most enjoyable aspects of the role is the ability to train the new generation of nurses coming into the hospital over the years.
“I also took great pride in supporting student nurses to develop skills whilst on placement on the ward, indeed this has benefited the ward in the long term as some of these nurses have taken posts on the ward after qualifying.
“The Children's Ward team have supported me in my role over the years which is commendable.
“I have also made some very dear friends and colleagues along the way.”
The Western Trust wished Irene the very best in her retirement, and thanked her for her many years of service.
“Irene began her career as a staff nurse and progressed to deputy sister and in recent years became an incredible Ward Manager,” the Trust said.
“She has had a big impact on a lot of young children and their families with her care and compassion being recognised by so many.
“She will be greatly missed in Children’s Ward and we wish her all the best. Thank you Irene for being one of our Western Trust Heroes.”
