NHS Lanarkshire is spreading awareness of domestic abuse as figures in South Lanarkshire soar above the national average.
The most recent figures outlining incidents of domestic abuse across local authorities in Scotland shows the council area’s figures are above those elsewhere in Scotland.
Incidents of domestic abuse recorded by the police are 123 per 10,000 population in South Lanarkshire, with the Scottish national average 119 per 10,000 population.
According to the overall Scottish data, 80 per cent of cases involve a female victim and a male accused; 16 per cent of cases were a male victim and female accused; with three per cent involving same gender abuse.
People aged between 31 to 35 years old have had the highest rate per 10,000 population for both victims and accused.
On Thursday, NHS Lanarkshire took to social media to raise awareness of domestic violence.
They Tweeted: "Controlling behaviour takes away your choices in life and the things that make you, you."
Anyone dealing with domestic violence is urged to call Scotland’s Domestic Abuse Helpline (0800 027 1234) to speak in confidence and report the violence.
Victims should contact 101 to report abuse or 999 in an emergency, a website is also available for advice.
