NHS doctor warns against dangerous and untrue TikTok pregnancy test trend

An NHS doctor has poured cold water on a TikTok "Plan B" pregnancy test trend and has urged people not to follow it.

The platform is hugely popular among video sharers which can be amusing, scary or educational.

But are many videos on the social network contain a multitude of misinformation.

The impact of videos, which often go viral, can be dangerous as wrong information is circulated.

One misinformed trend showed pregnancy tests being wrongly used and doctors have warned against the move.

The TikTok footage shows someone breaking open a test and revealing what appears to be a pill inside .

A caption was added by the poster which read: "Plan B inside pregnancy test" with a shocked emoji, indicating that there was an emergency contraceptive pill stashed inside the plastic test.

But doctors rubbished the idea and said it was completely untrue.

Dr Karan Rajan, who works for the NHS, debunked the idea of a "plan B pill" inside the test with his own video.

He said those taking pregnancy tests or trying to avoid pregnancy should not eat the tablets inside.

The so-called "pills" inside are not plan B or emergency contraceptive pills.

Dr Rajan: "No. Do not eat the tablets you find inside a pregnancy test.

"They are a desiccant tablet used to absorb and hold moisture to extend a shelf life of a pregnancy test similar to the little silica packets you find in shoes and bags."

The pills, he warned, are toxic for human consumption and will will not only not stop a pregnancy.

But he said they could be dangerous and he urged people who have swallowed them to go and see a doctor.

The doctor's video, titled 'don't do this', gained nearly one million views, and attracted comments and more than 100,000 replies.

One person, who responded said: "I thought that was obvious," while another said it seemed like common sense not to swallow the pills.

Another joked: "These people are the reason why there’s instructions on a pop tart box."

The advice demonstrates people should not rely on online information and if they are unsure on how to use a pregnancy test, follow the instructions on the packet or provided leaflet.

The Mirror told on Sunday how a woman has left people in hysterics after she revealed how her positive pregnancy announcement went wrong.

In a post on Reddit, the anonymous woman explained she recently found out that she is expecting her third child after a bout of intense nausea prompted her to take an at-home pregnancy test.

Instead of telling her husband the exciting news straight away, she came up with a plan to surprise him - but it didn't exactly go to plan..

"I was feeling the nausea hard and used a pregnancy test that I still had from the box from the last time I thought I was pregnant and, boom, baby in the oven," she wrote.

The mum threw the positive test into her bathroom bin and went on her way.

It was only later when she remembered that her husband always takes out the rubbish, that she realised that her surprise baby reveal could be in jeopardy.
