NHS doctor issues urgent tanning warning to anyone hoping to sunbathe in the hot weather

A few days of sunshine has brought out the shorts and tees but that shot of warmth comes with a warning. One NHS doctor took to TikTok of issue a stark reminder of what damage we could be doing to ourselves when the weather hots up.

In the video, TikTok star and NHS doctor, Dr Karan Rajan, expresses his concerns about those thinking of basking in the sun. He says that if you are thinking about tanning - stop.

The general surgeon and lecturer, who appears in the video with his dog, regularly posts medical information on social media. However, he stresses the opinions are his own.

In his latest video he says: "You might not like what I have to say but I'm going to say it anyway. Okay, if you are going to try and get a tan this summer, stop right there."

Dr Rajan goes on to point out that: "A tan is a sign that your skin is damaged. When your skin cells detect DNA damage coming from UV radiation, they signal the pigment producing cells - the melanocytes - to produce more of the pigment melanin to stop further damage.

"The production of this pigment melanin causes a sun tan. Tan is a response to the skin damage on a cellular level, it's your body going into protection mode."
