Following the tragic deaths of NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, the Gaudreau family has been overwhelmed by the support they have received. A GoFundMe campaign was launched for Madeline Gaudreau, Matthew’s wife, who is expecting their first child in late December. The campaign aimed to assist Madeline and baby Tripp by easing some of the financial burdens they are facing during this incredibly challenging time.
The fundraiser exceeded its initial target of $30,000, with over 5,000 supporters contributing more than $365,000 by Saturday afternoon. Numerous NHL players were among the donors, with many contributions referencing Johnny Gaudreau’s jersey number, 13, which he wore during his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames. The funds raised will be utilized to cover Matthew’s funeral expenses and support baby Tripp.
The Gaudreau brothers tragically lost their lives while cycling in New Jersey on Thursday night, just before their sister’s wedding. They were struck from behind by 43-year-old Sean Higgins, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. The sports community mourned the loss of the Gaudreau brothers, with an outpouring of tributes highlighting not only their on-ice talent but also their kindness and positive impact on those around them.
Sean Higgins was arrested and charged on Thursday night after admitting to consuming alcohol while driving. He faces charges of two counts of death by auto, reckless driving, possession of an open container, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. A judge ordered that he be held until his next court appearance on Thursday.
