After a flurry of moves around the league at the start of the NFL’s legal tampering period, the San Francisco 49ers got involved in the action with the addition of a veteran edge rusher across from Nick Bosa. On Monday afternoon, Ian Rappoport of NFL Network reported the 49ers are signing former Buffalo Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd.
Via @RapSheet on Twitter:
Floyd is coming off a 10.5 sack campaign in his only season in Buffalo, with 32 tackles and nine tackles for loss. Before joining the Bills, Floyd played for the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears.
After reports began to surface of Floyd’s signing with the 49ers, the NFL community on Twitter weighed-in with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying about Floyd on Monday afternoon.

Favorite stat about 49ers new edge rusher Leonard Floyd is that he has not missed a single start in 6 consecutive seasons! pic.twitter.com/q9bn8BsgW4

Leonard Floyd’s last four seasons:
10.5 sacks, 19 QB hits
9.5 sacks, 18 QB hits
9 sacks, 22 QB hits
10.5 sacks, 19 QB hits
Now he’ll rush the passer opposite Nick Bosa#49ers https://t.co/sSitnPupad— Rob Lowder (@Rob_Lowder) March 11, 2024
Leonard Floyd is by far the most consistent and productive player that they have paired opposite Bosa
It raises the floor of the pass rush, especially given his propensity for clean up sacks
But it can't the only move they make, it has to be a piece of the puzzle

Leonard Floyd since 2022:

The 49ers have indeed made a big splash at edge rusher. Leonard Floyd had 10.5 sacks last season, a career high at Age 31. He's also been a good run defender, which is very important to SF.

Lots of #49ers fans underwhelmed by the Leonard Floyd move, and I'm not sure why.
The Niners got a consistent pass rusher at a good price. Stop looking at what Floyd ISN'T and start looking at what he IS.

49ers have needed to raise the floor of edge-rushing position opposite Nick Bosa. That's been Need #1 there.
Leonard Floyd:
-Hasn't missed a game in 6 years (108 straight)
-Averaged about 10 sacks in each of past 4 seasonsSteady, dependable performer. Much value here at $10m

Brandon Staley was the OLBs coach in Chicago in 2018, where Leonard Floyd played as well.
Then Staley went to Los Angeles, Floyd followed.
Now Brandon Staley comes to San Francisco and Floyd joins him again.

Signing Leonard Floyd is a lot smarter than signing Joey Bosa.

Leonard Floyd's last 4 seasons:
⢠2020: 10.5 sacks
⢠2021: 9.5 sacks
⢠2022: 9 sacks
⢠2023: 10.5 sacksHe's pretty consistent if you ask me pic.twitter.com/gD0EsDRN94

Leonard Floyd is signing a "I'm going to set the floor of this position" signing. He'd basically this season Clelin Ferrell. Hoping they can finally draft someone that can play that spot long term.

Sacks over past 4 seasons…
Leonard Floyd: 39.5
Brian Burns: 38.5#Checkmateð— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) March 11, 2024
Niners sign Leonard Floyd 2/20. Teams always remember who burned them. Floyd's last game vs. 49ers in 2022: 9 tackles (team high), 2 sacks, 3 QB hits, and 2 tackles for loss.
— Tom Jensen (@Ninercast) March 11, 2024
Leonard Floyd hasn't missed a game since the 2018 season with Chicago.
Reliable veteran, who's notched at least 9 sacks in 4 straight seasons. #49ers have tried the younger, bargain-bin route opposite Bosa and haven't found success. So, they go the proven veteran route.
— Akash Anavarathan (@akashanav) March 11, 2024
New #49ers edge rusher Leonard Floyd is one of 3 players w/ 9+ sacks in each of the past 4 seasons, along with Myles Garrett and Haason Reddick
— Josh Dubow (@JoshDubowAP) March 11, 2024
Leonard Floyd has played in 108 straight games. He hasn't missed a game since 2017. Don't overlook that level durability - and his statistical consistency.
It's very understandably a point of emphasis for the 49ers

$12M guaranteed in Year 1 for Leonard Floyd doesn't necessarily mean that $12M is his cap hit.
$12M = Floyd's signing bonus + Year 1 base salary + other bonuses
The cap hit will depend on exactly what the signing bonus is, if any void years are used, etc.

I'll take Leonard Floyd!
