NFL player sedated in 'critical condition' after collapsing during game

American football star Damar Hamlin is 'sedated' but remains in a 'critical condition' after collapsing during a match, his club said. Buffalo Bills were taking on the Cincinnati Bengals before the game was suspended following the incident.

The 24-year-old went to ground after colliding with an opponent during the first quarter of the game. His club have now said he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Centre for more tests and treatment.

A Buffalo Bills spokesman said: "Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition."

A vigil displaying a message saying 'pray for Hamlin' with the player's number three has been spotted outside the UC Medical Centre in the aftermath. Concerned Bills fans also gathered outside the medical centre to show their support for Hamlin.

According to the BBC, Jordon Rooney, Hamlin's representative, wrote on Twitter: "His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests. We will provide updates as we have them."

Earlier this morning the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the game had been postponed following the incident. In a statement, the NFL said: “Hamlin received immediate medical attention on the field by team and independent medical staff and local paramedics.

NFL players have shared an outpouring of support for Hamlin. Cornerback Cam Lewis tweeted: "Praying for my brother. Keep fighting bro."

While Reggie Gilliam said: "The whole nation is behind you." Quarterback Josh Allen added: "Please pray for our brother."
