NFL owners have apparently been supportive of a potential Commanders sale for years, and now that appears close to a reality. However, some owners are still upset with the process.
Nicki Jhabvala and Mark Maske of The Washington Post report that some people within the NFL are “disappointed” that Snyder is selling the team for just $6.05 billion, a. In fact, one person said that they thought the franchise was worth closer to $7 billion.
Because the league wants the deal to get done with as little friction as possible, they are willing to move forward with the deal as currently constructed, even if that means Snyder choosing a less-than-desirable bid.
One potential NFL concern Harris reportedly has is adding billionaire philanthropist Mitchell Rales to the bid, since the NFL prefers one lone owner to hold at least 30% of the team. Still, the NFL isn’t expected to have an issue with the structure of the deal if it meets league requirements.
According to Jhabvala and Maske, the league is satisfied enough with Harris’s ownership group that it will handle Snyder selling for less than expected. The report also lists billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos and Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta as two other people who remained in the bidding until the end. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reportedly explored a bid, but he believed he was being used to raise the price.
