NFL icon Rob Gronkowski has slammed Green Bay Packers legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers after his recent words about returning for the 2023 season.
The 39-year-old's future has come under question ever since the Packers failed to make the playoffs after a disappointing season, and whether the team will be good enough to compete within the next few seasons.
With Rodgers in the final years of what has been a hall of fame career, it has been suggested he could look to play elsewhere after the team traded away his superstar receiver, Davante Adams, to the Las Vegas Raiders - a team who have been linked with trading for Rodgers.
After winning back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021, Rodgers play this past season declined after losing his favourite target in Adams, and looked to be frustrated with his receivers at times throughout the season. But Rodgers even admitted himself that he had to play better, with his level of play being a farcry from what we'd seen in previous years.
After the season though, the quarterback stated that he was sure he could still play at an MVP level. He said: "I think I can win MVP again in the right situation.
"Right situation, is that Green Bay or is that somewhere else? I'm not sure, but I don't think you should shut down any opportunity. Like I said during the season, that's got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward, and I think there's more conversations to be had."
Former New England Patriot and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Gronkowski has spoken on why Rodgers words rubbed him the wrong way, arguing that the quarterback does not have his priorities in order.
Gronkowski told NFL reporter Kay Adams: "I’m totally fine with everything he said, except one major part, and that’s the ‘MVP again.’ It’s just that I think ‘I could win another Super Bowl,’ and that would have been totally fine.
"Like, bro, like why are you thinking MVP? Don’t you want Super Bowls? Like Super Bowls are I think five times greater than an MVP award.
"We all know that you won the MVP a few times now, but like, you know, everyone would know even more how many more Super Bowls you won than MVPs. So that’s why I’m just a little bit confused about that quote he just had. I mean, it should be Super Bowls.
"You should never be thinking the MVP when Super Bowls are twice . . . twice . . . better."
Rodgers has won one MVP, back in 2010, and has only played in one Super Bowl throughout his career.
