With NFL free agency on the horizon, keep your attention on cornerback Carlton Davis, who the Jacksonville Jaguars may have an interest in.
In a recent article from ESPN, NFL insider Jeremy Fowler named the Jaguars as a team to watch when it comes to Davis’ availability.
“Some teams have Davis as the No. 2 corner in the class,” wrote Fowler. “Watch for Jacksonville to potentially make a move here. The Jaguars likely won’t be huge spenders in free agency, but they want to fortify their secondary.”
After spending his first six NFL seasons in Tampa Bay, Davis joined the Detroit Lions for the 2024 season, where he missed the final three weeks of the season and the playoffs with a jaw injury.
In coverage, Davis allowed a completion rate of 59% with the Lions, surrendering 13.6 yards per catch with two interceptions and six pass breakups. Quarterbacks also had a below average passer rating of 87.9 when targeting him.
Addressing the secondary will be a big need for the Jaguars this offseason. They finished 2024 ranking 24th in completion rate allowed and in the bottom three of the NFL in passer rating, yards per attempt, and interceptions.
Salary cap-wise, the Jaguars have $35 million in available cap space, which ranks right in the middle of the pack as the 17th-most. Like every other team, there are ways for the Jaguars to create more room, but as Fowler mentions, the team may not be big spenders this offseason.
Pro Football Focus is projecting that Davis lands a three-year deal worth $42 million this offseason.
The Jaguars are currently still searching for a defensive coordinator as well as a general manger.
