NFL insider expects Daniel Jones’ contract to be less than what’s been reported

Rumors that quarterback Daniel Jones asked for $45 million annually from the New York Giants remain unsubstantiated. There are some who still “believe” that’s the case but it’s nothing anyone can confirm.

Still, the rumors have spread like wildfire, and it has led some Giants fans to do some questionable things.

Buy Giants Tickets

Late last week, one Giants fan took it upon themselves to locate the building housing the offices of two Athletes First agents that represent Jones. They then adorned the building marquee with a message demanding Jones “gratefully accept” whatever the Giants offer.

But all the outrage and questionable decision-making may be for naught.

During a Monday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said that Jones’ final contract numbers will be less than what’s been reported.

However, Rapoport cautioned that Jones could still get paid a good chunk of change based on where the market currently sits.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it came in and the number started with a 4,” Rapoport said. “The market for quarterbacks is either $40 (million) and above or other. I mean, it’s the good ones who are your franchise quarterback or it’s the, with all due respect, (the others).

“In negotiations, everyone asks for more, the team offers less, and then you settle in the middle. So him asking for $45 (million), I don’t know for sure that that demand or request was made in negotiations, and if it was that would be fine, but I expect the number to come in less than that regardless.”

As those of us at Giants Wire have been saying, there’s no need to read into the $45 million rumor and get bothered by it. There’s no confirmation that it’s true and even if it were, that’s common negotiating. If Jones’ agency weren’t starting at a high number and working backward they wouldn’t be doing their jobs.

Woosah, Giants fans. Woosah. Now leave the Athletes First building alone.
