The NFL reportedly dealt Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid hefty fines after they criticized the officiating of last week’s controversial offsides call on Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Saturday that Reid received a $100,000 fine and Mahomes received a $50,000 fine for critical comments they made after Sunday’s Bills-Chiefs game.
“Chiefs coach Andy Reid has been fined $100,000 for violating long-standing league rules prohibiting public criticism of game officials,” Rapoport shared on social media. “QB Patrick Mahomes has been fined $50,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct for abusive, threatening or insulting language to officials, plus violating long-standing league rules prohibiting public criticism of refs.”
It’s a major statement by the league to deliver such stark fines on two of the game’s most recognizable faces.
A ticked-off Mahomes yelled at the game’s officials after the offsides call on Toney negated a potentially game-winning touchdown and said he’d never seen a call like that in his career, while Reid called the offsides call “a bit embarassing” for the league.
Both Mahomes and Reid walked back some of their frustrations in the days to follow.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell closed the book on the controversy this week by saying the officiating crew got the offsides call right.
