The Bills were able to hold on at home Sunday night and beat the Giants, 14-9, in an ugly game that wasn’t decided until the final play with no time left on the clock.
Fans watching, however, thought there should have been one more play, because it sure looked as if Buffalo cornerback Taron Johnson got away with what looked like an obvious holding call that prevented Giants tight end Darren Waller from catching a possible game-winning touchdown pass from Tyrod Taylor.
NBC rules analyst and former NFL referee Terry McAulay tried his best to explain why a call wasn’t made, but his best wasn’t very good at all.
Should the Bills have been called for holding on the last play (a pass in the end zone to Giants TE Darren Waller)?

NBC #SNF rules analyst Terry McAulay talks it over with Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth. 🏈🦓📺🎙️ pic.twitter.com/gDq0cFH8tg
Cris Collinsworth’s explanation was a lot better, because it sure looked like holding was an easy call that should have made.
NFL fans were not happy with McAulay and how he handled that final play:
Terry McAulay out here doing his best to carry water for the @NFL and pretend the refs didn't blatantly blow that last call. Good to see Cris Collinsworth didn't let him off the hook and called him out. Eventually, Terry had to admit he agreed it was a bad call. What a sham.

Can we stop with the rules analysts on these broadcasts? If we can't agree that water is wet, why do we need them?

Embarrassing stuff from Terry McAulay during the postgame coverage.
Terry McAulay has been awful every time NBC brings him in. College or pros https://t.co/VMbZSErcI4

Terry McAulay does everything in his power to NOT say “the ref got it wrong” even though he literally describes HOW the ref got it wrong lol https://t.co/07QM5VGyac

Rules experts do nothing to help these games. Here’s another example https://t.co/9RExJcrdlw

Terry McAulay doing some serious cleanup work for the league right now. Not a hold because the ball was in the air? Ok then, PI. Johnson doesn’t turn around.

Listening to Dean Blandino & Terry McAulay stumble over their words trying to make a bad call sound reasonable has become unbearable
— Tyler (@TylerSorrentino) October 16, 2023
Terry McAulay initially said the grabbing of the jersey didn’t hinder the receiver but then said it did hinder the receiver. Well, which one is it?? @NFLOfficiating is horrendous. I don’t think they actually know what the rules are

What the hell is Terry McAulay talking about? I am also so tired of these "rules experts" who come on just to defend horrendous calls. They add no value to the broadcast if they are just going to play defense lawyer for bad refereeing
