NFL fans boo their own kicker as Chicago Bears coaches call for 'saddest punt ever'

Chicago Bears fans were left dumbfounded after their coaching staff elected to punt from 48 yards instead of going for a field goal on fourth down.

The Bears had worked their way to the Philadelphia Eagles' 31-yard line and were well within field goal range. However, a series of incomplete plays saw them lose ground, with a fourth-and-27 situation staring them in the face.

While fans may have expected them to go for the field goal, however, they instead elected to punt, despite being so close to the opposing end zone. Kicker Trenton Gill instead trudged onto the field to punt downfield.

The kick, which went down inside the opposition ten yard line, was fairly short and allowed for the bears to enclose the Eagles on their own nine-yard line.

But Bears fans were less-than-impressed with their team's lack of ambition, and could be heard loudly booing the decision not to go for the field goal.

The move backfired significantly, with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts slinging a long pass down to DeVonta Smith, who went down on the Bears' 25 yard line for a gain of 37 yards.

On the same drive just moments later, Hurts played a quarterback sneak to sprint 22 yards for a touchdown, turning the game on its head in the Eagles' favour.

It wasn't just fans inside Soldier Field who were upset, however, with supporters on social media venting their frustrations too. One wrote: "Sad punt alert in Chicago for the Bears! Punted at opponent 31 yard line."

Another posted: "Lmao a 22 yard punt. That’s a cowards punt if I’ve ever seen one. Thanks bears," while one wrote: "“Saddest punt ever” watch in the Bears game."
