New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has not exactly been hiding his desire to acquire additional 2023 NFL draft assets. In fact, he’s publicly stated that he’s very much open to such potential trades.
“I’m open to moving up, moving back, whatever it may be, as long as I can sleep good at night with the decision that I make,” Schoen said of potential 2022 and 2023 trades.
At least one NFL executive agrees with that approach. In fact, they believe it would be “malpractice” if the Giants didn’t trade back in the 2022 NFL draft in order to acquire an additional 2023 first-rounder.
“Given their quarterback situation, it would be malpractice for them not to try to trade one of those early picks to get a first-rounder next year, unless they think they are going to be in the veteran quarterback world,” the executive told The Athletic. “Philly already has the extra one next year — they are a year ahead of New York with a better team.”
The Giants appear firmly committed to Daniel Jones this season, but they still have a decision on his fifth-year option. If not picked up, it would pave the way for New York to move on in 2023. But that would only happen if Jones bombs again this season.
Another talent evaluator believes that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
“I don’t think the quarterback (Daniel Jones) can play, and instead of spending a bunch of money this year to try to look pretty, they will evaluate their own and go forward that way,” the evaluator said.
But not everyone is in agreement. A second NFL executive, who specifically studied the Giants’ offense, said co-owner John Mara had it right earlier this year: Jones has never received a fair shake.
“They are trying to find out who Daniel Jones is. Watching their offense, I’m like, ‘My God, this poor kid hasn’t had a chance.’ Daniel Jones is talented,” the executive said. “Looking at their roster, they got work to do.”
However things play out with Jones is irrelevant. The Giants are cash-strapped headed into the 2022 NFL draft and may not be able to afford to make all nine picks. But beyond just that, the 2023 class of prospects is deeper at key positions of need for the Giants, so they should attempt to acquire future assets no matter what they intend to do with Jones.
