With EDGE Tyree Wilson at seven overall and TE Michael Mayer at 35 overall in the second round, the Raiders set up to make their third pick in this year’s draft.
At 70 overall in the third round, the Raiders select Byron Young, DT, Alabama.
Young was a second team All-American last season for the Crimson Tide. He started all 13 games along the interior defensive line, putting up five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.
The 6-3, 294-pounder addresses a major need along the defensive interior for the Raiders.
Young was not seen as much more than a run stopper over his first three seasons at Alabama, but his senior season, his pressure numbers jumped up considerably. He had 28 pressures last season which was more than his first three seasons combined. The Raiders are hoping his addition along with that of Tyree Wilson at 7 overall will bulk up a defensive front which was one of the worst in the league in sacks last season.
