The San Francisco 49ers have been given seven in total, the most of any team, with Kyle Shanahan's side landing three round 3 picks. Jonathan Gannon's Arizona Cardinals have the first compensatory pick in the draft, the 96th selection overall in the third round.

Other notable selections include the Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs all getting picks in the third round. The 2023 edition of the Draft is being held in Kansas City next month with the Chicago Bears currently in possession of the number one pick after a 3-14 record in the 2022 season.

The Houston Texans have the second overall pick after a 3-13-1 record while the Arizona Cardinals possess the third pick. The NFL reports that additional compensatory draft picks were introduced in an 'effort to to promote equal employment opportunities within NFL teams' as an alteration of the 2020 collective bargaining agreement.

What are compensatory draft picks?

In total, 32 compensatory picks are handed out to teams also based on the value of players lost and acquired during free agency. A formula is used to determine where a pick should be positioned in the draft based on factors including a player's salary, how much he has played and what he won with a new team.

The most recent NFL Mock Draft has Will Anderson, the Alabama linebacker, heading to Chicago with the number one pick while the Houston Texans are tipped to bring in Anderson's college team-mate, quarterback Bryce Young, with the second pick. Before the Draft, though, is free agency with March 15 the day teams can begin to sign free agents with player contracts expiring then and a new League season officially beginning.

Teams can trade players for Draft picks and vice versa.
