Sunday marks the third week in a row in which an NFL game has taken place in London. With the matchups consistently being played across the pond, fans began to wonder if this means the league could consider hosting a Super Bowl in the British capital.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that the league has discussed such an idea, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen any year in the near future.
“It is not impossible, and it is something that has been discussed before,” Goodell said at a fan forum in London last week, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The biggest issue holding this possibility back, though, is that the league likes to play Super Bowls in cities with NFL franchises. London does not have an official NFL team.
“I think that is not out of the question,” Goodell added. “But at the end of the day, I think right now our formula will stay the same about playing [Super Bowls] in cities that have franchises.”
As fan bases grow stronger on the other side of the world, Goodell admitted the league is still open to the idea that London could host a Super Bowl in the future.
