The Houston Texans’ No. 12 overall pick presents a myriad of options.
The Texans’ proprietary pick at No. 2 overall presumptively will be used on a quarterback. However, the extra pick in Round 1 — obtained via 2022 offseason trade with the Cleveland Browns — is a wildcard. It could be used to give the new quarterback another talented weapon, or provide another first-round cornerback. Houston could even take an edge defender.
One name that hasn’t exactly been linked to Houston at No. 12 overall much is Clemson defensive tackle Bryan Bresee. Nevertheless he could be a possibility at that spot in the first round.
According to NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, what makes Bresee risky is his consistency.
“To me he is a tough player to evaluate because you see flashes of it,” Jeremiah said on a conference call Feb. 24. “You see some of the flash its of the quickness. I know he has obviously battled the injuries. I think there’s some stiffness there, and maybe some of it is injury-related, but he is not the most loose athlete. They move him around up and down the line of scrimmage, but I didn’t see somebody that was really, really explosive and fluid and loose.”
Bresee provided 15 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and two pass breakups through 10 games for Clemson in 2022. Jeremiah says that teams he has spoken with don’t view him as a first-round pick, but it could change during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium from Feb. 28 through March 6.
“I know as people have been out there and said, oh, the combine doesn’t have value and it’s Underwear Olympics,” said Jeremiah. “It’s a great example of a player that I haven’t seen him move around in person, and I think there’s people in scouting departments and GMs and head coaches that have some questions there as well. And to get out there and see him with your own eyes after he has had time to get healthy and train, you know, somebody like that to see those guys move in person, it does have value. I’m looking forward to seeing him in Indy.”
Should the Texans like Bresee, but not with the value of a first-rounder, they still have opportunities to grab him at No. 33 overall in Round 2 and Nos. 65 and 73 overall in Round 3.
