New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones recently made his debut appearance on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2022 list. Some were supportive, while others took issue with the rankings.
NFL.com’s Jeremy Bergman is among those who questioned the quarterback on the list.
Jones had a strong year in 2021. He tallied 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. In last Friday’s preseason finale, he got in some action against the Las Vegas Raiders in a game where he went 9-of-13 passing for 71 yards and an interception.
Despite an impressive rookie campaign last season, Bergman counted Jones’ inclusion on this list as one of several things players got wrong.
Bergman wrote:
“…QBs coming off their rookie year have cracked the Top 100 before, most notably Dak Prescott at No. 14 in 2017, Robert Griffin III at No. 15 in 2013 and Justin Herbert at No. 56 just last year. But each of those men had just won Offensive Rookie of the Year, an honor Jones looked primed to receive before being outran by the obvious correct selection, Ja’Marr Chase.”
Jones led the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth in his first season with the team.
After starting out the season slow, the Patriots and Jones got into a bit of a groove with the rookie quarterback showcasing the ability to lead the team to six regular-season wins in a row.
Now, we’ll see if he can start the season off on a better note. Jones and the Patriots will go to Miami, where they both started and ended the season last year.
The second-year quarterback’s ability to win in Miami will be tested, as New England looks to begin the 2022 season on a high note.
