NFL awards Cardinals 3 compensatory picks

The NFL announced 37 compensatory selections in the 2023 NFL draft. As expected, the Arizona Cardinals receive three.

They will receive a third-round pick (No. 96 overall) for the loss of receiver Christian Kirk in free agency. They receive a fifth-round pick (No. 168 overall) for the loss of linebacker Chandler Jones and a sixth-round pick (No. 213 overall) for the loss of running back Chase Edmonds.

They did not sign any qualifying free agents to counter those losses.

There were only 30 compensatory selections based on the formula for free agency. As 32 must be awarded per the collective bargaining agreement, the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans, who hold the first two picks in the draft and were the two worst teams in the league in 2022, each receive a supplemental pick to reach 32.

There were five additional special compensatory picks were awarded to the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs as part of a league agreement to reward a franchise for developing a minority candidate hired by another team to be head coach or general manager.

The 49ers receive three this year and the Browns and Chiefs each receive one.
