NFL approves use of No. 0 for uniform for most players

It was just a couple of years ago when the NFL loosened restrictions on the numbers that a player could wear on his uniform.

Single-digit numbers, which were limited to quarterbacks, punters and kickers, were opened to all players except for offensive and defensive linemen.

Another number option has been added — No. 0.

At the league’s annual meeting, owners approved a change that allowed all positions to be able to wear No. 0 except for offensive and defensive linemen.

Will we see an Arizona Cardinals player debut No. 0?

It can be costly. A player who returns to his team this season who wants to change his number must buy out the stock of his jersey with his current number.

Receiver Calvin Ridley of the Jacksonville Jaguars will wear No. 0. He is on a new team so he won’t have to buy out his jersey stock.
