Before the Chicago Bears take the field for the start of the 2022 regular season, there’s plenty of work to be with the roster during training camp and preseason.
Right now, Chicago has 90 players on the roster, but that number will be cut down gradually to 53 players during their three preseason games.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, league owners have approved roster changes for the preseason as teams trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players. There will be three deadlines for roster cuts with the first two consisting of just five players while the final roster cut is more severe.
Here’s when the Bears will have to trim their roster:
- 85 players – after first preseason game
- 80 players – after second preseason game
- 53 players – after third preseason game

This is a change from previous years where teams were allowed to carry 90 players on their roster to the final preseason game before ultimately making one big cut.
Last season, the league staggered cutdowns throughout the three preseason games (from 90 players to 85 to 80 to 53). It’ll be more of the same heading into the 2022 season.
