The Atlanta Falcons have to be happy with what they saw from rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in his first NFL start. While the numbers don’t jump out, Penix’s decisiveness, arm talent and pocket mobility were on display during Sunday’s 34-7 win over the New York Giants.
The Falcons were criticized for drafting Penix with the No. 8 overall pick after signing Kirk Cousins to a four-year $180 million contract, but the decision continues to look better as time goes by.
Many around the NFL were impressed with the Falcons rookie’s performance against the Giants. Here’s a look at how those in the media reacted to Penix’s debut.
ESPN’s Mina Kimes
Box score (drops, goofy Pitts INT) does not reflect how well Penix Jr played in that first half.
Thought he looked poised, drove the ball on out-breakers, saw the MOF well, and beat the blitz–even his throwaway to avoid a sack was impressive.

CBS Sports’ Mike Renner
the Penix tape is so much better than the box score
thinking a lot of people are going to regret their draft takes (myself included)

Former Falcons QB Kurt Benkert
Just finished breaking down Penix Jr Film (will be on my YouTube later)
He has it. Decision-making, timing, accuracy, anticipation, velocity, layered throws, manipulating defenders with his eyes, standing and delivering in the face of pressure, and COMMAND
The Falcons got one

Penix may be the strongest physically of the rookie QBs. Can already shrug off sacks and avoid big losses/not get hit with an intentional grounding. pic.twitter.com/6h91FklewI

Not only did the Falcons win Penix’s first NFL start, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night to put Atlanta back atop the NFC South.
Penix will face off against Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels in prime time next Sunday in a game that could impact the NFC playoff standings.
