NFC West watch: future looking bleak in SF for Trey Lance

Seattle’s fiercest rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, have long had issues at quarterback but it could be rounding into form somewhat. Surprise rookie quarterback Brock Purdy did undergo UCL repair surgery, but his timeline could have him ready by the season opener.

Meanwhile, the 49ers did sign former Jets and Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold in free agency. Of course, this leaves one name unmentioned: former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance.

Lance, who started the season, was carted off with a season ending leg injury in Week 2 against the Seahawks. Since then, he has become somewhat of an afterthought. Once slated to be a potential franchise caliber signal caller, Lance might be looking squarely at a third string role.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter went on the Pat McAfee Show where he discussed San Francisco’s quarterback situation. Schefter believes if healthy, Purdy is the obvious starter with Darnold the likely backup.

Interestingly, Lance not having a trade market is eerily reminiscent of the 49ers inability to find a suitable trade for another former quarterback of theirs, Jimmy Garoppolo.
