NFC West Watch: Cardinals release WR DeAndre Hopkins

Seattle’s rivals in the desert, the Arizona Cardinals, are already an early contender to be among the worst teams in football this coming season. Now, they will have to face the 2023 campaign without their best wide receiver.

On Friday morning, the team announced they officially released star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. He is now a free agent.

It seems the Arizona Cardinals are incapable of avoiding drama in their organization. Last year it was surrounding quarterback Kyler Murray, his contract, and a rather unusual stipulation which leads many to question his commitment to football. This spring it’s been about Hopkins looking to find another team.

Hopkins first came to the Valley of the Sun before 2020 in a lopsided trade with the Houston Texans, which was mocked mercilessly before and after. In his three years with the Cardinals, Hopkins scored 17 touchdowns but only eclipsed the 1,000+ yard mark once.

The question on everyone’s mind is wondering where the soon-to-be 31-year old will sign. Hopkins may not be the most dynamic receiver in the league any more, but he has more than enough left in the tank to give whichever offense signs him some extra firepower.

As for the Cardinals, how they’re going to move the ball in 2023 is going to be quite the experience to watch.
