Neymar drops sensational Brazil quit threat after World Cup penalty shootout agony

Neymar has admitted he is thinking about quitting international football following Brazil’s shattering exit from the World Cup.

The tournament favourites were dumped out of the tournament in the quarter finals by Croatia after a penalty shoot-out.

Brazilian coach Tite resigned within hours of the defeat and 38-year-old Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has announced that he will not be playing for his country again following the heartbreak in Doha.

Now Neymar has revealed that he is now considering his future at the age of 30.

Neymar said: “I want to take time to think about the national team and think about what I want for myself.

“I am not closing the door on the national team, but I am not saying 100 percent either that I will come back.

“I feel really bad at this moment. It is hard to take in everything that has gone on.

“It seems like a nightmare. I just can’t believe what has happened.

“I will now have to take comfort from my family - but this defeat will hurt for a long time.”

Tite, 61, admitted his time at the helm was over after Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup on penalties for the first time since 1986.

Silva, though, admitted his time is up after a 113-cap career that stretched over 14 years.

“Unfortunately I will now never lift the World Cup as a player,” said Silva.

“Who knows, maybe I will get another chance to lift it in some other role in the future.”

Brazil’s players locked themselves in the dressing room for two hours.

The five-time champions have not lifted the World Cup for 20 years - their longest-ever period without the trophy.

They flew home to the capital Brasilia this morning, with a stop-off in London to allow European players the ignominy of the reaction back in South America.

Neymar gave Brazil the lead in extra-time with his 77th goal for his country - putting him level with the legendary Pele as his nation’s all-time leading scorer.

But Croatia took the tie to penalties thanks to Bruno Petkovic before goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic became the hero in the shoot-out for the second successive game.

Neymar insisted there were no recriminations - and told fans to lay the blame at his door rather than blame Real Madrid youngster Rodrygo for missing his spot-kick.

Neymar said: “Rodrygo is a young boy. I told him and the rest of the team that the responsibility is mine because I’m one of the oldest.

“Rodrygo is a playmaker so he wanted to take a penalty - but only those who step up to take a shot can miss.

“Not only him, all of us are going to learn from this.

“There is no one culprit. We win together and we lose together.

“In the dressing room, we spoke about the things we should learn from this experience.

“I spoke a few words about the squad and the time we have spent together.

“We’ve made a lot of friends here. I am glad to have been part of this group.

“I am proud of every player. Unfortunately we didn’t crown this squad with a victory, but it happens.”

Neymar added: “We are in mourning in this moment of sadness.

“It is difficult to find words to comfort each other.

“”Unfortunately, we were unable to fulfil our dream - but that is football. It happens.

“The thing is that this career goes by so very quickly, so you have to make the most of it.

“Your career in the national team has to come to an end eventually - and there will always be younger people there to take your place.”
