Next England captain odds as Eoin Morgan looks set to retire from white-ball international cricket

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has emerged as the heavy favourite to succeed Eoin Morgan as England captain in the white ball format. The current captain is set to announce his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday.

Under Morgan's leadership, England rose to number one in the world rankings in both one-day internationals and T20 formats as well as winning the World Cup in 2019 after a dramatic final at Lord's against New Zealand. It is thought he wanted to stay on and lead England at the T20 World Cup in Australia this year but the 35-year-old has struggled with form and fitness over the last 18 months.

He missed the conclusion of their Netherlands tour with a groin niggle having been dismissed for a duck twice in high-scoring innings, largely thanks to Buttler who is 1/10 with Betway. If he reports are true that he will retire from international cricket and end his seven-year reign as England captain he will no doubt go down as one of England's most successful captains having picked up 7,701 runs from 248 ODIs with 14 centuries. In T20, he made 115 caps with 2,458 runs including 14 fifties.

Other players named in the market are all-rounder Moeen Ali at 6/1 and current Test cricket captain Ben Stokes at 14/1. Bookies favourite Buttler picked up one of England's fastest ODI centuries with 47 balls just last week, beating his record of 50 against Pakistan but was just short of top sport, also against Pakistan from 46 balls.

Who is in the running to succeed as England captain?

Here are the latest odds from Betway on the England captain:

  • Jos Buttler - 1/10
  • Moeen Ali - 6/1
  • Sam Billings - 10/1
  • Ben Stokes - 14/1
  • Jason Roy - 14/1
  • Chris Jordan - 16/1
  • James Vince - 16/1
  • Adil Rashid - 20/1
