'Next Andy Murray' Jacob Fearnley wins through to the next round of Australian Open

Young Scottish tennis star Jacob Fearnley remained modest when responding to a fan who labelled him the next Andy Murray.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past year, going from 646th to 92nd in the world rankings.

Currently down under at the Australian Open, Fearnley knocked former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios out in his tournament opener, and he recently booked his place in the third round after defeating Frenchman Arthur Cazaux 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3.

The man from Edinburgh left the court after his recent victory over Cazaux to a wealth of fanfare from both Aussies and Scots.

Indeed, one supporter asked for a picture and labelled him 'The next Andy Murray', to which Fearnley simply replied: "I don't know about that."

Murray, who retired just last year, won several Gland Slam titles, and there are hopes Fearnley could follow in his footsteps.

Next up, a tough tie against German second seed Alexander Zverev awaits him, with a place in the fourth round up for grabs.

Fearnley, who has already won a hefty £140,000 for his impressive exploits down under, previously hailed Murray as a key influence: "Growing up, he was a big inspiration, and he was the figure who I watched the most," he said.

"What he has achieved for himself and his country has been amazing, the way he fights on the court and the way he plays has been special to watch. Any tennis player growing up in the UK, and especially Scotland, he is someone we all aspire to be. Hopefully I can follow in his footsteps but I know it is a very hard task."
