Newtown Park: PSNI confirm cause of blast that injured man

Police have confirmed that an explosion inside a car in South Belfast on Friday night, which injured one man was not as a result of 'criminal activity'.

A man was taken to hospital on Friday evening following what at first was believed to be a car bomb, exploded in a vehicle in the Netwon Park area of the city.

In a statement on Saturday morning, August 20, PSNI confirmed the blast was actually caused by a 'gas canister inside the vehicle.

A spokesperson said: " Police can confirm the explosion in the Newtown Park area of South Belfast was as a result of a gas canister in the vehicle, and not due to any criminal activity.

"All roads have reopened in the area. One man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries where he remains at this time."

Inspector McCourt added: "We would like to thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this time."
