'News to me' - James McPake on David Wotherspoon Dunfermline transfer links

Dunfermline boss James McPake has refused to be drawn on a possible move for David Wotherspoon.

Wotherspoon is back in the country after international duty with Canada at the Gold Cup, where they lost to fellow hosts the United States in the quarter-finals.

The 33-year-old is on the lookout for a new club after being freed by St Johnstone following a decade with his boyhood heroes.

The midfielder is pals with Dunfermline assistant Dave Mackay from their time together at Saints and watched from the stands as the Pars defeated Annan Athletic 4-0 in the Viaplay Cup on Tuesday night.

But McPake remained coy when asked about his interest in the former Hibs player.

He said: “He’s just back from international duty with Canada but he’s not in here [training].

“It was news to me. I asked Dave if he’d invited him to the game and he said, ‘no’.

“That’s genuinely as much as I know about it, there’s been nothing else whatsoever.

“If a player comes in that’s young that we think we can add to the squad, we’ll bring him in.

“If it’s somebody who is 32, 33, 34, whatever, and we think they can add to this squad then we’ll do our utmost to sign that player.”

Meanwhile, McPake has confessed that former Dundee and St Mirren midfielder Paul McGowan could end up moving elsewhere, despite spending pre-season with Dunfermline.

The 35-year-old has been training with the Pars and played in their pre-season friendlies but has not yet signed a deal and cannot play as a trialist in the Viaplay Cup.

McPake added: “He’s still here but he’ll have a few options, I’m sure. That’s something that we’re having to deal with at the minute; the longer it goes, the greater the possibility he’ll go elsewhere.”
