News, notes ahead of Dolphins-Broncos matchup

The Miami Dolphins will host the Denver Broncos on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, kicking off at 1:00 p.m. ET.

Miami leads the all-time series 12-7-1, including the playoffs. They’re 2-3 in the last five games against Denver with the last game being a 2020 loss against then-Broncos head coach Vic Fangio.

In that 2020 game, the Dolphins had just 56 rushing yards and got sacked six times by Fangio’s defensive unit, which included former Bronco and current Dolphin, Bradley Chubb, who got a sack that game as well.

The Dolphins are 12-2 in their last 14 games at Hard Rock Stadium, which is the best stretch they’ve had since they went 12-2 from Dec. 2001 through Sept. 2003.

  • The Dolphins are one of six teams to allow one sack or less in the first two games of the season. Miami has only allowed four quarterback hits so far which is second in the league.

  • Off his tremendous performance on Sunday Night Football, Raheem Mostert is now third all-time (in the Super Bowl era) in the career yards per carry statistic with 5.39 career yards per rush. Bo Jackson is second at 5.40 while Rashad Penny is number one at 5.67.

  • The Dolphins have seven sacks through the first two weeks of the season, good for eighth in the NFL. This mark ties the team’s franchise for the most sacks in a two-week start to the season since 2000. Trace Armstrong and Jason Taylor combined for 31 sacks that year.
  • In his career, when Andrew Van Ginkel plays over 70% of the defensive snaps, the Dolphins are 14-5. When he plays over 80% of the defensive snaps, Miami is 7-1. In games where Van Ginkel has played 50% or less of the defensive snaps, Miami is 16-17.
  • Xavien Howard has three interceptions in two career games against the Denver Broncos. He’s two interceptions away from tying his cornerback coach Sam Madison, for third on the Dolphins franchise list with 31 picks (including playoffs). Howard’s 29 interceptions lead the NFL since 2016.

  • The Dolphins are 8-1 all-time at home against the Broncos.
  • Tua Tagovailoa is currently 10-1 against Super Bowl-winning head coaches and could make it 11-1 on Sunday (10 in a row in this case) if Miami beats Sean Payton. He’s already gotten a win against a Payton-led team, beating the New Orleans Saints in 2021.
  • The Dolphins will welcome fans to open up Hard Rock Stadium, on the strength of a 2-0 start with wins on the road within the AFC conference. A win by the Dolphins on Sunday would give them a second consecutive 3-0 season. The last time the Dolphins opened up consecutive seasons 3-0 was 1994-1996 when they started 3-0 in three straight years.
