The newly renovated Imperial residence at the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda Ward was unveiled to the media on Wednesday.
The residence, where the Emperor and his family will live from September, was originally built in 1993 for the Emperor Emeritus and the Empress Emeritus.
Renovation work started in June last year after the Emperor Emeritus had moved to the Imperial residence in Takanawa in Tokyo's Minato Ward, following the Emperor's accession to the throne.
The renovation was completed in June this year.
The two-story concrete building with one basement floor is divided into three wings: a 630-square-meter guest reception wing; the Imperial family's private quarters, which span 970 square meters, and the 1,480-square-meter administration wing, where Imperial aides and other employees work.
The whole residence spans 5,290 square meters.
The renovation, which cost about 870 million yen, involved replacing old piping and redecorating interiors. No changes were made to the original floor plan.
The Emperor is expected to move into the residence in mid-September, after the Tokyo Paralympic Games.
