Newly opened Glasgow west end coffee shop to host 'sip and swap' book event

A newly-opened Glasgow west end coffee shop is hosting a special 'sip and swap' book event.

The brunch event will encourage booklovers across the city to read more sustainably by swapping their old books with other readers’ books, rather than buying new.

Hosted by Hinba, a new speciality coffee shop located on Dumbarton Road, the 'sip and swap' will see bookworms swap four of their books for four others.

The September event is the brainchild of avid reader, columnist, broadcaster, and environmentalist Heather Suttie. During lockdown, she founded Bookface, an online book community with more than 2200 members globally.

Heather said: "Hinba is a beautiful spot in the hustle and bustle of the West End and I’m so excited about hosting our Sip and Swap event during the September weekend.

“If like me you love vintage and recycled fashion and second-hand books you can make a day of pottering about as Hinba is near a number of great charity shops where there are bargains to be had on clothing, accessories and books, so ideal if you want to enjoy a sustainable Saturday in the West End.

“Enjoy lovely coffee, bring along four books to swap and with each ticket purchased you’ll be entered into our luxury raffle. You’ll be able to choose from 150 books of every genre. Tickets are limited to 30 - so be quick! “

Ferg McCoss, co-owner of Hinba, which also operates a cafe and roastery in Oban, said: “Since moving to the West End, we’ve been enchanted by what a wonderful place it is - we could spend the whole day exploring the book shops. We’ve also come to realise what a unique place it is, and love nothing more than seeing someone enjoy a coffee while reading a good book.

“We’re always doing everything we can to drive sustainability, so are very pleased to work with Heather in her drive to give a second life to much-loved books.

“I can’t wait to meet more members of our community and bond over a shared love for books. I hope this is the first of many community events at our venue. ”

The Sip and Swap takes place in Hinba on Saturday, September 24 from 10am to midday. Tickets are £20 which include entry to a luxury raffle, two specialty coffees (or tea) and a pastry. You can buy tickets here.
