It's not often that you can say that Newcastle upon Tyne will be hotter than many sought after holiday destinations, but this week's heatwave across the entirety of the UK will see temperatures exceed popular tourist hotspots. With temperatures of up to 36C expected to land in the North East tomorrow (19 July), the Toon will top summer travel spots like Athens, Cancun, Sao Paolo and Florida to name a few.
The Met Office have in-turn issued a rare amber weather warning for the region, which is in place both today and tomorrow - before temperatures plummet to somewhat normal as the rest of the week plays out. With highs of 36C expected to tip the mercury tomorrow, Newcastle upon Tyne will be hotter than Athens in Greece, which isn't even expected to break out into the 30s (29C). As well as this, gusts of winds will be prevalent in the Greek capital, providing respite to holiday makers abroad.
Cancun in Mexico is also a usual holiday hotspot for Brits looking for fun in the sun, but temperatures expected tomorrow of 32C are much less than those in Newcastle and it's surrounding areas. Elsewhere, parts of Florida are also only expected to hit 31C today and 32C tomorrow - marginally less than Newcastle's 32C and 36C respectively.

Sao Paolo in Brazil is renowned for being a hotspot year round, but lacklustre temperatures of 22C and 26C tomorrow can't compete with those in England. Curacao in the Caribbean will also struggle to match up in terms of temperature, respectively seeing highs of 29C both today and tomorrow.
Elsewhere in the UK, London is predicted to be hotter than the Caribbean, the Western Sahara as temperatures soar today. The rise in temperatures has forced the UK Health Security Agency to issue a level 4 heat-health alert – described as an 'emergency' – while the Met Office has issued the UK’s first red extreme heat warning, with both running from Monday to Wednesday.
The capital’s scorching temperatures mean it will be warmer than Nassau in the Bahamas (32C), Kingston in Jamaica (33C), Malaga in Spain (28C), Athens in Greece (35C), Albufeira in Portugal (28C) and Dakhla, in the Western Sahara (24C). Other areas of England will also experience hotter weather than the holiday destinations, with the Midlands predicted to see highs of 37C, East Anglia with 36C and the North West with 33C.
Britons are being urged to stay inside during the hottest points of the day, between 11am and 4pm, and wear sun cream, a hat, stay in the shade and keep hydrated with water.
