Newcastle vs West Ham LIVE: Premier League final score as struggling Hammers claim shock result

West Ham produced their best performance of the season to end Newcastle’s winning run and lift the pressure on manager Julen Lopetegui with a 2-0 win at St James’ Park.

Newcastle had won their last three games in a row and could have gone sixth with another under Eddie Howe, but were stunned by a resilient West Ham side who were clinical when the chances came.

Tomas Soucek was allowed a free header from a corner to give West Ham the lead against the run of play after 10 minutes. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s first goal for the club doubled their lead after half time.

Newcastle, who saw an early Alexander Isak goal disallowed for offside, were frustrated in their attempts to get back into the game and Anthony Gordon had a close-range shot saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

West Ham remain 14th in the table but their fourth win of the season puts some distance between themselves and the relegation zone Follow all reaction below

West Ham break Newcastle’s spell to lift pressure on Julen Lopetegui

22:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka combined to burst Newcastle’s bubble as West Ham handed under-pressure boss Julen Lopetegui breathing space with a priceless Premier League away win.

Soucek headed the Hammers into a first-half lead in front of a largely stunned crowd at St James’ Park before Wan-Bissaka’s first goal for the club ended the Magpies’ three-game winning run in all competitions with a 2-0 defeat which prevented them from climbing into the top six.

Eddie Howe’s men were culpable for both goals, but also guilty of not using the wealth of possession they enjoyed effectively enough on a night when chances went begging.

By contrast, the visitors were lethal on the break and produced the most fluent passages of play to leave Tyneside more than satisfied with a job well done.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: “I don’t think anything takes me by surprise in the Premier League, we know every team has qualities.

“We were the dominant team at half-time and the game would have been very different if we had equalised before the first half.

“I’m pretty pleased with the first 60 minutes albeit we’re losing the game 2-0. We opened them up and had chances to score. Up to that point I was pretty pleased but the last 30 minutes I didn’t enjoy. We tried a bit too hard to score. We’ll rue that when we watch the game back.

“For both goals we know we made individual mistakes. It was disappointing from our perspective. Very uncharacteristic from us because we’ve defended well in recent weeks.

“At the end we had players out of position, so I didn’t like the way we looked at the end. But up until that 60 minute mark I thought we were the dominant team.

“For Callum’s [non]-penalty I thought it was a tight call and I’d need to see it again. The offside goal looked tight, I thought it would be a longer review and hopefully drop in our favour.”

Jarrod Bowen, speaking to Sky Sports after an important win on the road.

“I said we needed a performance, and we got one. Newcastle always score at home, so to score twice and keep a clean sheet at a difficult place to come, an atmosphere we have to control and somewhere we had to be brave, we did it perfectly.

“That was the level it takes to play for this club. The desire, work rate and quality shown from everyone. It is important that we rest up. It’s a massive game on Saturday [vs Arsenal].

“They are a top, top side. We can take a lot from this game. The group we have had are so good. There is a real togetherness but sometimes you can fall off with new players.

“It’s down to me to show what it means to play for this club. Every one understood the assignment. We have been disappointed with our standards this season but that was more like it.”

Newcastle did not have a single shot on target in the second half - but they did have a shout for a penalty for this incident between Callum Wilson and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

It was checked by VAR, who said: “The referee’s call of no penalty for the challenge by Mavropanos on Wilson was checked and confirmed by VAR, deeming that the contact was not sufficient for a penalty.”

Newcastle go to Crystal Palace on Saturday and then host Liverpool in midweek. Goals are a real problem for Eddie Howe now. They’ve scored just 13 goals in 12 games in the Premier League this season - and have now been shutout three times (also against Brighton and Everton).

West Ham host Arsenal on Saturday at the London Stadium, then they play Leicester and Wolves. This result means the Hammers have something to build on, with 15 points from 12 games (six points above the relegation zone) a slightly better picture for Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui, speaking to Sky Sports:

West Ham could be ‘rolled over’ by Newcastle

19:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher has predicted that West Ham could be “rolled over” by Newcastle tonight and warned that Julen Lopetegui could face the sack if results don’t improve.

“This is a team that have lost five games by two or more goals. This is not what West Ham fans want,” Carragher said.

“Lopetegui is fortunate that they have not pulled the trigger, if it doesn’t change very quickly, I think there could be a change.

“It’s not an easy game tonight, I could see them getting rolled over.”

Key to that comeback was Harvey Barnes, who scored twice from the bench. He has an impressive record against West Ham too.

He’s either scored or assisted in each of his last four against West Ham (4 goals, 1 assist) and has scored in each of the last three.

Newcastle United host West Ham United on Monday night in the Premier League, with both sides in need of the points for somewhat different reasons.

The Magpies had a fairly indifferent start to the campaign but two wins on the bounce before the international break leaves Eddie Howe’s team in eighth, only one point behind the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea before the weekend’s action began.

In a congested top half of the table, consistency will be key to their hopes of attaining European football for next term and staying ahead of the likes of Aston Villa, Spurs and Manchester United will be vital to doing so.

As for the Hammers, Julen Lopetegui has had a very poor start to his time in charge and although he’s not concerned about talk of pressure, three wins from 11 matches tells its own story.
