Newcastle United thumped Manchester United 4-1 to go fourth in the Premier League and claim their first league double over the Red Devils since the 1930s.
Harvey Barnes scored twice in the second half, either side of goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, as Newcastle leapfrogged Manchester City and Chelsea and took a huge step towards securing a Champions League spot for next season.
With manager Eddie Howe in hospital, Newcastle made a bright start and opened the scoring when Tonali volleyed in Alexander Isak’s clever dink. Alejandro Garnacho equalised before half time but Barnes scored a quickfire double after the restart.
Ruben Amorim took the decision to rest Andre Onana after his errors against Lyon in midweek but it did not stop another goalkeeping mistake as Altay Bayindir’s misplaced pass was punished by Guimaraes for Newcastle’s fourth.
The visitors remain 14th and their season now hinges on Thursday’s Europa League second leg against Lyon, with Joshua Zirkzee a major doubt after limping off in the second half with a hamstring injury. Follow all the Premier League reaction with our live blog below:

Report: Ruben Amorim’s tenure at Man United condensed into one sorry afternoon at Newcastle
19:30 , Will CastleManchester United’s league form this season has been so bad that their remaining domestic fixtures, with a sensational relegation avoided, pale in insignificance in comparison to their efforts on the continent.
That fact will not make events at St James’ Park on Sunday any easier for Ruben Amorim to stomach after witnessing his entire tenure in England condensed into 90 miserable minutes in the north east.
It appears bursting the Newcastle positivity bubble is going to take some doing, with Harvey Barnes’ double inspiring the buoyant hosts, who celebrated tackles with a jubilant St James’s as if they were goals, to a fifth successive win in all competitions.

Man United's goalkeeping woes only worsen
19:10 , Will CastleAltay Bayindir could have stamped his mark as the man who should be starting in between the sticks for United after Andre Onana was left out of the squad.
Not to be for the Turkish international.

18:24 , Will CastleNewcastle regain their place in the top four with an emphatic win over Manchester United, whose Premier League woes continue.
Sandro Tonali got the Magpies on their way before Alejandro Garnacho pegged them back before the break with a tidy counter-attack goal.
However, it was all Newcastle after the break, with a Harvey Barnes brace being added to by a simple finish by Bruno Guimaraes, capitalising on another goalkeeping error for United.

Fair play to the travelling supporters, they’re staying in full voice - well, the ones that have stuck around this long are.

Newcastle 4-1 Manchester United
18:18 , Will Castle88 mins: Nearly another mess from Bayindir as he plays with the ball in his own six-yard box, with two black and white shirts quick to hound him.
This time he escapes embarrassment, but things really don’t look good between the sticks for United.
When does it become time to turn to Tom Heaton?
Newcastle 4-1 Manchester United
18:14 , Will Castle85 mins: Some spiky conversations as Joelinton and Guimaraes make way as the Magpies captain has to effectively drag his compatriot off in the midst of a war of words with Lindelof and Ugarte.

It’s all coming up Newcastle.

Has that completely cheered you up? Thought not.
Newcastle 4-1 Manchester United

17:57 , Will Castle68 mins: With a game in hand, Newcastle could be in a brilliant position coming out of this weekend - currently fourth and well in the hunt for Champions League football.
If United want to throw a spanner in the works, they really need to wake up.
GOAL! Newcastle 3-1 Manchester United
17:53 , Will Castle64 mins: GOAL! Harvey Barnes right through the heart of United!
He nicks it off Mazraoui and drives at the United back-line, bursting through the gap before bending one into the top corner.
What a strike, and a what massive goal that could be in Newcastle’s push for Champions League.
Newcastle 2-1 Manchester United

United are caught cold as a ball comes across the box - it goes beyond the goal-face but it falls to Jacob Murphy, who puts it back into the danger area where Barnes is tap in!
Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United
17:36 , Will Castle48 mins: Zirkzee has space to drive into and slips it through to Dalot - Tonali bundles into him but no penalty says the ref.

HALF-TIME! Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United
17:20 , Will CastleIt’s all square at the interval.
Newcastle looked to be cruising after they took the lead through a brilliantly-worked Sandro Tonali goal, but were struck on the counter as Alejandro Garnacho produced a tidy finish to equaliser.
All to play for after the restart.

Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United

That should be the break.
Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United

He looks ok and after a moment is back up to his feet. Welcome to the men’s game.

Dalot leads a devastating counter before slipping in Garnacho, who produces a tidy finish to equalise against the run of play.
Newcastle 1-0 Manchester United
17:07 , Will Castle35 mins: United are hanging on at the moment.
Isak gets onto the loose ball and jabs it beyond Bayindir before trying to dink it in from the tight angle - it floats excruciatingly across the face of goal before going being twitched out of play by Lindelof.
Barnes then heads over from a dangerous position moments later.
Under the cosh.

The Italian charges onto the ball and tucks it away with aplomb. Gorgeous football.
Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United
16:54 , Will Castle23 mins: CLOSE! Bruno delivers into Isak who nods towards the bottom left-corner.

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United
16:36 , Jamie Braidwood4 mins: CLOSE! I’m loving the confidence Jacob Murphy is playing with right now. Zirkzee gives away a cheap ball in midfield and Murphy tries his luck from range. A low drive skids past the post.

Ruben Amorim explains decision to leave Andre Onana out of Manchester United squad
16:27 , Jamie BraidwoodRuben Amorim has explained his decision to take Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana out of the firing for the visit to Newcastle.
Onana made two high-profile mistakes against Lyon on Thursday and Amorim said he wanted to let the goalkeeper “disconnect” and clear his head.
Onana is still expected to be recalled for Thursday’s second leg of the Europa League quarter-final with Lyon but his deputy Altay Bayindir making his belated Premier League debut at St James’ Park.
"These are normal things, sometimes you have to push the player to play again or let them disconnect,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “Tomorrow he’ll be in training to prepare for the next one. This was a good time to disconnect.”
When asked to explain how Onana took the news, Amorim said: “He was OK. You don’t need to like [the decision] but you need to understand because I explain every situation. It’s a normal situation. We have to manage everything, the mental aspect is really important and it’s just one game."

Kick-off fast approaching
16:20 , Will CastleJust a few minutes until we get underway at St. James’s Park.
Man United’s season might be all but over, but every game is precious to the hosts in their push for Champions League football. Newcastle will be eager not to experience a shock at the hands of Ruben Amorim’s men.
We’ve got all the action, up next.

Elsewhere in the Premier League
16:16 , Jamie BraidwoodChelsea dropped more points in pursuit of Champions League football after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Ipswich at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Maresca’s side trailed 2-0 but could not salvage a victory to return into fourth place.
That result means Newcastle would go into fourth place, overtaking Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester City, with a win against Manchester United today.
'Everyone wishes him the best and we hope he’ll be back soon'
16:14 , Jamie BraidwoodJason Tindall offers an update on Eddie Howe, who was admitted to hospital on Friday evening.
“Obviously he’s not been well this week and he’s been to hospital on Friday evening. Everyone wishes him the best and we hope he’ll be back soon.
“When you’ve been ill all week it’s very difficult to have the input he would normally have. But the players know the expectations and it’s up to them to put in a performance the manager would be proud of.”
Manchester United investigate treatment of fans after Lyon travel chaos
16:10 , Will CastleManchester United are looking into the treatment of their supporters in Lyon after police used tear gas following Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final.
Thursday’s first leg in France was attended by 2,800 away fans, who were required by local authorities to travel to a conference centre 13 miles away from the city centre to collect wristbands before boarding shuttle buses to the ground.
The significant expense and inconvenience of those demands were compounded by a malfunctioning public transport network and large queues at the pick-up point before the fans were taken to the Groupama Stadium in the east of the city.
More problems followed the 2-2 draw against Lyon, with tear gas used by police as fans were held back for an hour.

Despair for Red Devils in last meeting
16:00 , Will CastleMan United’s dreadful season was encapsulated in a 19-minute period when these two sides met at Old Trafford in December.
Newcastle toyed with their hosts and found the breakthrough in just four minutes through Alexander Isak, before Joelinton doubled their lead 15 minutes later.
The Magpies could have easily had more in what was a thoroughly-deserved win - and they’ll be hoping for something of a repeat today.

Newcastle can't afford slip-up in closely-fought race for Champions League
15:50 , Will CastlePoints are precious for Newcastle in the race for Champions League as they look to keep pace with their rivals for a top-five place.
After Man City and Aston Villa picked up wins yesterday, Newcastle have dropped to seventh but could launch themselves back above both with victory against United.
At the same time, with just eight points separating Eddie Howe’s side and 10th-placed Bournemouth, Newcastle can hardly afford to drop points at this crucial stage of the season.

Newcastle’s Jason Tindall on stepping in for Eddie Howe: ‘I’ll keep being me’
15:40 , Will CastleJason Tindall will continue to be himself as he attempts to play his part in bringing Champions League football back to Newcastle United.
The 47-year-old has made something of a name for himself as head coach Eddie Howe’s number two at St James’ Park, repeatedly ruffling the feathers of opposing benches since their arrival on Tyneside in November 2021.
Softly-spoken away from the heat of Premier League battle, Tindall is hugely competitive on the sideline and has vowed not to change.

Why is Andre Onana not in the travelling Man United squad?
15:10 , Will CastleAndre Onana has been left out of Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s game with Newcastle to clear his head after his two mistakes against Lyon.
Manager Ruben Amorim has decided to take the goalkeeper out of the firing line, following problems on and off the pitch.
Onana is still expected to be recalled for Thursday’s second leg of the Europa League quarter-final with Lyon but his deputy Altay Bayindir is set to make his belated Premier League debut at St James’ Park.
The Cameroon international had been branded one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history by the Old Trafford old boy Nemanja Matic before the 2-2 draw at the Groupama Stadium, with his erroneous performance only acting to fuel criticism.
