Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:26

Level at the interval, Barnes’ second-half brace decided the fixture and secured Newcastle United’s first league double over Manchester United since 1930-31, courtesy of a 4-1 win. Joelinton’s disallowed goal under a minute into proceedings didn’t matter in the end for the result, with the Magpies eventually putting themselves ahead 23 minutes later through Tonali’s volley at the end of a flowing move. Garnacho pulled one back ahead of half-time to give the match an air of parity, but any thought of that ended four minutes into the second period, when Barnes popped up to tuck Murphy’s pass over the line and into an empty net. The winger would take advantage of Mazraoui’s slip just after the hour to double the advantage, and his personal tally, and more errors at the back would present Guimaraes with the chance to make it four, after Bayindir’s clearance was sent right into the chest of Joelinton on the edge of the area. Clinical and efficient, Tindall’s team created an xG of 2.09 and scored with more than half of their efforts on target, while Manchester United laboured with 0.61 xG and largely failed to create opportunities to test Pope. The Magpies go into fourth with the win ahead of a match with Crystal Palace on Saturday, while Manchester United stay 13th and host Wolves on Sunday after their second leg with Lyon on Thursday. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and Manchester United - we hope you’ve enjoyed it!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

Hojlund gets into Newcastle’s penalty area and looks to work a bit of space ahead of Schar to work a shot, but the striker holds on a little too long. Running out of room, he’s forced to eventually hit a low effort towards goal, but it’s easily turned behind and out for a corner by the centre-back.

The fourth official indicates five minutes will be added to the end of the match for stoppages.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:20

HOJLUND HEADS WIDE! Shaw approaches the penalty area before opting to whip a dangerous, left-footed cross to the edge of the six-yard box for Hojlund, who makes great contact and cranes his neck to put an effort on goal from close range, only to miss the target entirely!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:17

Victory for Newcastle would make them the fourth team to do the Premier League double over Manchester United this season, the most different sides to do so in a single top-flight campaign since 1957-58 (also four).

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:15

It looks to be a stop-start final 10 minutes, with both sides making a number of substitutions and niggly fouls to break up play. It appears that the visitors are resigned to their fate, and will go three Premier League games without a win for the second time since February, leaving them adrift in 13th.

Hojlund’s desperate cross from the left in the shadow of Schar finds Mount with his back to goal near the penalty spot. Unable to turn, the substitute lays the ball off for Ugarte, whose strike from 24 yards away is gathered by Pope after taking out the sting.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:02

Barnes is only the second Newcastle player to score a brace against Manchester United in the Premier League, along with Alan Shearer in December 2000.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

18:01

Livramento volleys a pass forward into Manchester United’s half for Barnes, whose first touch allows him to slip past Mazraoui once again. Using the space he’s been given down the wing, the Newcastle player breaks into the penalty area and has a go at goal, but Mazraoui recovers and puts it out of play for a corner.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:59

Looking to make amends for his earlier defensive error at the other end of the pitch, Dalot displays close control in an attempt to get past Livramento and into Newcastle’s penalty area, but the full-back, who has one international cap for England, puts in a fantastic standing tackle to win back the ball.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:58

The result, as it stands, puts Newcastle firmly amongst the Champions League places, with three points taking the Magpies up into fourth; just one back of Nottingham Forest in third. With the first five places gaining Champions League entry ahead of next season, Howe’s team have a two-point gap ahead of nearest challengers from outside Chelsea, who could only draw Ipswich Town earlier today.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

Fernandes curls a weighted pass over the head of Murphy and towards the byline for the run of Dorgu, who can’t manage to keep onside in his pursuit - which prompts the linesman to raise his flag.

17:52

Manchester United have only gone on to win two of their last 15 Premier League away games that have been level at half time (six draws and seven defeats), although one of those victories did come in the most recent one (1-0 against Fulham in January).

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:51

Trippier launches a free-kick from the halfway line towards the edge of the 18-yard box for Burn, who knocks it down for Isak. The striker manages to spin and chip a cross to the far post, where Mazraoui’s glancing header takes the ball onto Schar, but his eventual centring pass is whacked away by Lindelof.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:49

Trippier and Isak look to work a short-corner routine but it ends painfully for the full-back, who runs straight into Fernandes before being upended. It’s a strong but fair tackle in the eyes of referee Chris Kavanagh, who allows play to continue with the visitors in possession.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:47

Bayindir’s loose pass out from the back gifts possession to Guimaraes inside Manchester United’s penalty area, but Murphy’s eventual scooped cross is headed away by Ugarte and put out of play for a throw by Dorgu.

Newcastle United get the match restarted from the kick-off!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:26

Barnes has been a bit of a peripheral figure in the first half for the hosts, with most of their attacking play coming down the right through Isak and Murphy. Gordon - who passed a late fitness test - would be the natural replacement on that flank and could inject a bit more pace and dynamism into the front line, as they chase a winner. Wilson could also be sent on to either replace or play alongside Isak, while Manchester United’s like-for-like swap in attack would see Hojlund come on for Zirkzee. Casemiro may be needed in place of the booked Ugarte in midfield, while Shaw may be inching ever-closer to a Premier League return should Amass be recalled to the bench.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:23

Despite starting on the front foot from the opening kick-off, Newcastle United were unable to keep their one-goal lead until the half-time whistle, as Garnacho’s strike with less than 10 minutes to play in the period cancelled out Tonali’s earlier finish to leave the teams level at one after 45 minutes. The hosts had the ball in the net within 45 seconds after Joelinton’s close-range volley beat Bayindir but an offside call in the build-up would keep the two sides level for another 23 minutes, until Tonali capped a lovely, flowing Magpie move with a driven, first-time shot ahead of the half-hour mark. Dominant in terms of shots and xG (0.59 to 0.3 for the side today coached by Jason Tindall in Eddie Howe’s absence), the visitors were given just enough of an opening to get back into the game - which Garnacho took with a lovely finish into the far post at the 37th minute. Both Bayindir and Pope have been called into action on a couple of occasions - making key saves to keep their team in the match - which leaves the fixture at St. James’ Park on a knife’s edge ahead of the second period of play.

Trippier is finally allowed to send his inswinging corner into Manchester United’s 18-yard box but the opportunity comes to nothing after Guimaraes sends his back-post header high and wide of the target.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:14

Trippier looks to deliver his inswinging corner but he’ll be forced to retake it after pushing and shoving in the area between Schar and Amass leaves the Manchester United wing-back down on the ground.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:11

Trippier’s latest corner is palmed away by Bayindir, but only as far as Joelinton 10 yards from goal. Looking to make the most of the chance, the Brazil international swings his leg at the ball but the shot is blocked from close range by Mazraoui, who protects his goalkeeper.

Goal Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:07

GREAT DOUBLE STOP! Barnes spots the overlapping run of Livramento and leaves the ball for the full-back, who picks it up in stride before hammering a shot from an acute angle near the byline. Bayindir gets two hands to the strike but can only push it into danger, with Isak on the spot winding up for a volley. The Sweden international makes great contact and looks to put his side two ahead but Bayindir somehow lunges across and makes the second save too!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:04

Dalot beats Joelinton for pace in midfield before playing a pass forward for Garnacho, whose low cross into the penalty area is put a few inches too far ahead of Fernandes, and just too far behind the run of Zirkzee.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:01

Tonali is given the time and space to have three touches to set himself before firing a shot towards goal from 30 yards out, with nobody in the Manchester United defence ready to close down the Italy international. Looking for a second in quick succession, this time the midfielder doesn’t get his angles right - missing the net entirely.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

17:00

Lindelof steps forward out of defence to harry Isak in possession, but the centre-back uses his hands a bit too much and gives away a free-kick deep in the right channel.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:52

Guimaraes chips an inviting pass down the right flank for Isak, who is looking to stretch the Manchester United defence, but Amass takes up a good position and puts in a well-timed sliding challenge. Newcastle are given a throw deep in the opposition’s half but it gives the visitors a chance to regroup and reorganise ahead of play restarting.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:51

Burn is the 15th player to make his 200th Premier League appearance while playing for Newcastle, and the first since current team-mate Pope in October 2024.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:50

Trippier’s lofted free-kick from the left wing is poor and sent directly out of play at the back post, despite both Burn and Joelinton queuing up to attack the cross.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:47

Mazraoui’s off-balance clearance out from the back is pounced upon by Burn, who volleys the ball back into the 18-yard box for Isak. The striker brings it down from the sky with skill and poise before spinning to shape a cross to the back post, but it curls behind for a Manchester United goal-kick.

Yellow Card Manuel Ugarte Ribeiro

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:46

Murphy cuts inside from the right and scoops a cross towards the far post but without a team-mate in the area to attack the delivery, it provides an easy catch for Bayindir.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:45

GOOD PLAY BUT A BETTER SAVE! Eriksen’s incisive pass forward finds the feet of Fernandes on the edge of the penalty area and the Portugal international greets it with a nifty first-time touch across for Zirkzee. The pair of Manchester United players interchange quickly and instinctively, working the ball around the Newcastle defence, before the latter’s first-time shot is parried over the bar from close range by Pope’s outstretched arm!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:42

Ugarte’s cynical pull on Joelinton’s jersey gives Newcastle a free-kick in a promising position deep on the left wing.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:42

Zirkzee’s half-hearted appeals for a penalty are denied following the striker’s attempt to keep the ball in play ahead of the byline. Running out of room, the Manchester United player manages to volley it back into play - seemingly off the arm of Murphy - but the close proximity between the pair means it’s nothing more than incidental contact.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:40

Bayindir does just enough to get the ball away after taking an extra touch in possession near the penalty spot. With Isak furiously closing the goalkeeper down, he manages to curl a pass just out of the striker’s reach, finding Fernandes in midfield to avoid an early error.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:38

Dalot plays a pass into midfield for Ugarte before continuing his enterprising run down the right flank but the Uruguay international’s first-time return is errant and sent directly behind for a Pope goal-kick.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:37

JUST WIDE! Murphy picks up possession in a pocket of space 20 yards from goal In the right channel after Manchester United give the ball away following a throw-in. With time to pick his spot, the winger drives a low hit to the far corner, looking to beat the outstretched arm of Bayindir, but the effort misses the target by the narrowest of margins!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:34

Six of the last seven goalkeepers to make their first Premier League start for Manchester United have kept a clean sheet (Anders Lindegaard, Ben Amos, Victor Valdes, Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira, Andrea Onana), with Dean Henderson in December 2020 (against West Ham) the exception.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:34

AN EARLY GOAL BUT IT WON’T COUNT! Newcastle put the ball in the back of the net in less than 45 seconds after Trippier’s cross from the right finds the boot of an unmarked Joelinton inside the six-yard box, but the full-back was unable to hold his line in the build up, forcing the linesman to raise his flag for offside.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:32

Manchester United get the match under way from the kick-off!

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:17

Manchester United make five alterations from the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester City last Sunday. Amorim opts to drop Andre Onana from the squad as the result of recent errors, giving Bayindir a chance between the posts. Lindelof sits in the heart of the defence instead of Maguire while Amass patrols the left flank in Dorgu’s spot. Eriksen is selected ahead of Casemiro and Zirkzee leads the line, which leaves Hojlund on the bench.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:17

Newcastle United name an unchanged XI from the side that beat Leicester City 3-0 on April 7. Pope starts in goal behind a back four of Livramento, Burn, Schar and Trippier. Joelinton and Guimaraes sit either side of Tonali in midfield and in attack, Barnes and Murphy will look to supply Isak.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:07

Manchester United followed up their 0-0 in the derby last weekend with a 2-2 tie against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday, which leaves the tie perfectly poised ahead of the second leg this week. Three wins in their last 10 Premier League fixtures leaves Ruben Amorim’s side down in 13th position, just three points ahead of West Ham in 17th, while an inability to score has seen them blanked in each of their last two league fixtures.

Newcastle United vs Manchester United

16:07

Buoyed by their recent EFL Cup success, Newcastle United have since put together back-to-back Premier League wins against Brentford and Leicester City to remain in contention for the final Champions League spot ahead of next season. A single point back of Aston Villa in fifth with two matches in-hand, Newcastle are looking to complete a first league double against Manchester United since 1930-31 after their 2-0 victory in late December, but they’ll have to do without coach Eddie Howe - who is missing through illness.
