Newcastle United U18s survive late Colchester United rally to reach FA Youth Cup last-16

Newcastle United under-18s booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup with a well-earned 3-2 win over Colchester United at St James' Park.

The Magpies took the lead in the 12th minute through Bradley Chakawa's unfortunate own goal, before Callum McNally doubled their advantage shortly after the break.

Michael Ndiweni scored Newcastle's third with a close-range finish as Peter Ramage's side strolled into a commanding position heading into the final half an hour.

However, Colchester didn't give up and pulled one back thanks to Samson Tovide's strike, while T'aizo Marcel-Delaver halved the deficit in added-time, but it was too little too late.

The game took place in front of 1,279 spectators and the fans saw an excellent attacking performance from the Magpies, who created a number of opportunities and could've scored more on another day.

Meanwhile, Magpies goalkeeper Max Thompson also had to make some excellent saves to keep his side in the game, including a smart stop with his leg to keep out Samson Tovide's header.

Nevertheless, Ramage's team would've been delighted to hold out and secure a hard-earned victory over Colchester, who saw off Arsenal in the previous round.

Newcastle will now travel to Blackpool in the last 16 of the competition next month after the Tangerines beat Arsenal to get to this stage of the competiton.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leicester City, Everton and Chelsea are amongst the others still left in the cup, but the Magpies will be keen to get as far as they can heading into the game against Blackpool.
