Newcastle United transfers state of play: Howe preparing for more business after injuries hit

Eddie Howe is assessing Newcastle United's option going into the final straight of the summer transfer window.

Howe lost Emil Krafth for a matter of months following an ACL injury sustained at Tranmere last week in the League Cup and an injury to Bruno Guimaraes, coupled with Jonjo Shelvey's longer-term absence, exposed Howe's limitations in midfield. Ahead of the last two days of the window, a midfielder and forward player will come into his thoughts.

Howe said: "Maybe, we’ll have a look, and count the bodies, see who we have fit – and then see if we can make a decision in the market."

United are currently four players oversubscribed as far as the Premier League's final 25-man squad is concerned. One player who has been in talks with a new club is goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Howe though had no update on the Slovakia goalkeeper, he said: "Martin, I don’t know. I’ve been preparing for the game."

The Toon manager then confirmed he would have to plan ahead without Sweden international defender Krafth. Howe said: "It’s an ACL injury, so he’ll be out for a number of months."

Krafth only signed a new contract during Newcastle's short summer tour to Portugal. And Howe admitted he felt for the right-back, he reflected: "It’s a massive blow for us. "Emil has been superb for us every since I came to the football club in all sorts of ways, on the pitch, off the pitch.

"Brilliant guy. "So we’re all really, really feeling for him at the moment."

United's spending for 2022 topped the £200million mark after the arrival of Aleksander Isak.
