Newcastle United transfer rumours with Kieran Trippier’s ex teammate being monitored closely

The latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Thursday, 17 March.

Jan Oblak potential target for the Magpies

Newcastle are reportedly keen on bringing Atletico Madrid shotstopper Jan Oblak to Tyneside, with the club bidding to reunite the Slovenian with former teammate Kieran Trippier. Oblak could perhaps be available at a shorter price given he has only 18 months left on his contract, with the Magpies said to be an admirer of the English game.

Oblak, who is often referred to as one of the best goalkeepers in world football to date has made over 300 appearances for Atletico and was part of the squad that won the La Liga title last season. With the Toon's new found wealth and a new project here in the North East perhaps interesting the now 29-year-old.

According to GOAL, the player would be interested in a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano, with it being preferred if the club would be seen as a potential title challenger.

He said: "The Premier League has strong teams, maybe the strongest," Oblak, who speaks excellent English, told BBC Sport in April 2021. "I don't know what the future will bring, but I am sure that in any league I would play in I could play well.

Newcastle ready to make 'sizeable' bid for young star Nunez

Having already been linked to superstar striker Darwin Nunez earlier this year, the Uruguayan forward has again been linked with a move to St James' Park once more. Having netted the all important goal in Benfica's recent 1-0 triumph over Ajax earlier this week, rumours surrounding his future have again ramped up.

At just 22-years-old, Nunez has already shown his quality both domestically and on the European stage too. Manchester City, AC Milan and West Ham United have all expressed their interesting in the striker, but its the Toon who have also quietly gone under the radar as potential suitors too.

With reports from Sport Witness suggesting the player is still protected by a €150m release clause, not many clubs in world football bar the newly found rich Magpies could perhaps afford what current club Benfica are asking. With Premier League survival the imminent priority this season, Eddie Howe will again delve into the market this summer with Nunez's name continuing to be linked however.
