Newcastle United transfer rumours: Magpies track MLS star as fans told to 'start dreaming' of £63m deal

A round-up of the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Wednesday, March 2.

Newcastle keeping a close eye on MLS star with Leeds United also circling

Newcastle are reportedly keeping a close eye on Montreal Impact midfielder Djordje Mihailovic. The 23-year-old playmaker, who currently plies his trade in the MLS, has caught the eye of a number of clubs across Europe.

Jeunes Footeux claim that Newcastle, alongside the likes of Everton, Borussia Dortmund, Roma and Atalanta are tracking the 23-year-old with a view to a transfer. Mihailovic is already a United States international, having made six appearances for his country to date. The midfielder came through the youth set-up at Chicago Blast, before moving onto Chicago Fire.

The playmaker joined Montreal in 2021 and has scored four goals in 34 appearances for the MLS side.

Newcastle told to 'start dreaming' ahead of proposed Danjuma transfer

Newcastle have been told they can 'start dreaming and planning' potential summer transfers after their recent run of form saw them shoot up the Premier League table. The Magpies' seven game unbeaten streak has moved them four points clear of the bottom three and has seen them linked with the likes of Arnaut Danjuma in the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe is no stranger to the Villareal winger, having signed him for Bournemouth from Club Brugge. The arrival of the Dutch winger wasn't enough to keep the Cherries in the Premier League, and ultimately cost Howe his job on the south coast.

“That’d be a superb signing," Whelan told Football Insider. “If they can stay up then they’ll be looking for experienced players who have played at the highest level. When the new owners came in, their main aim will have been to stay in the Premier League so they can attract these top-class, Champions League-quality players.

“I think right now the owners will be over the moon with the progress they’ve made towards that goal, and the way the new signings have hit the ground running. Right now they can start dreaming and planning about potential moves for the summer knowing that safety could be just three or four wins away.

“Danjuma would be a great addition if he is part of those plans – I can see it happening as he’s played under Howe before.”
